31 January 2016: My iBook now only boots OpenBSD.
In January 2005 I found myself in need of a laptop, having had to return the Portege 2000 - and having recommended the iBook to my father-in-law and some friend's I though it was time that I took the plunge and bought an apple iBook G4, my first apple computer since the apple ][e.
Two reasons influenced my purchase of the iBook G4: the first was that it could run OpenBSD; and secondly that the price / performance / functionality was excellent for £699. Although I should have paid the extra £35 for the internal bluetooth adaptor.
Computer | Host | OS's | CPU | RAM | Hard Disk | Info |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Apple iBook G4 | ibook | Dual Boot [Mac OS X] [OpenBSD] |
macppc 1.2 Ghz | 256 Mb | 30 Gb | dmesg's 5.0 dmesg |
The iBook G4 had some frustations for me, like the keyboard, with the lack of the # key, and the fact that the @ and ~ symbols are in different positions - frustrating when touch typing ;~) and still cannot get used to a one button mouse....(give me three buttons!)
To boot into single user mode in OpenBSD use:
0 > boot hd:,ofwboot -s
Holding down the 'c' key during boot will allow OpenBSD to be booted from the CD-ROM.
To access Open Firmware you need to hold down Command, Option, O and F keys on boot, until a > prompt appears.
